A British car magazine reports a vehicle gets 45 miles per gallon. An American reader sees the number and assumes their commute costs roughly the same. But the British reviewer is using an imperial gallon (4.546 liters), while the American is thinking of a US gallon (3.785 liters). That 45 MPG imperial translates to about 37.5 MPG in US terms. Over a year of driving, that gap adds up to hundreds of dollars in unexpected fuel costs. The car is the same. The miles are the same. The gallon is not.

Units with identical or near-identical names that mean different things are responsible for a surprising number of real-world mistakes. Some of these differences are small enough to ignore in casual conversation. Others will wreck a recipe, a shipping invoice, or a precious metals purchase. This guide covers the five most common sources of confusion, with the exact numbers and the history behind each divergence.

US Gallon vs Imperial Gallon

The US liquid gallon equals exactly 231 cubic inches, which works out to 3.785411784 liters. The imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 liters. The imperial gallon is roughly 20% larger than the US gallon.

These two gallons descend from the same English measurement tradition but diverged centuries ago. The US gallon comes from the English wine gallon, standardized under Queen Anne in 1706 at 231 cubic inches. When the American colonies became independent, they kept the wine gallon as their standard.

Britain, meanwhile, went a different direction. The Weights and Measures Act of 1824 scrapped the old wine and ale gallons and replaced them with a single imperial gallon, defined as the volume occupied by 10 pounds of distilled water at 62 degrees Fahrenheit. That produced a larger gallon (4.54609 liters) that superseded all previous definitions across the British Empire.

Canada inherited the imperial gallon through the British Empire and used it until metrication in the 1970s and 1980s. Older Canadian cookbooks, fuel references, and industrial specs sometimes still use imperial gallons. If you encounter a Canadian source from before about 1985 that mentions gallons, assume imperial.

The practical impact is most visible in fuel economy. When a British source says a car gets 40 MPG, that is 40 miles per imperial gallon. The same car in the US would be rated at about 33.3 MPG. Comparing fuel economy numbers across the Atlantic without converting the gallon is a guaranteed miscalculation. The safest approach is to convert everything to liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), which removes the gallon ambiguity entirely.

Troy Ounce vs Avoirdupois Ounce

Walk into a jewelry store and ask the price of gold per ounce. The ounce they quote is the troy ounce, which weighs 31.1034768 grams. Walk into a grocery store and buy an ounce of cheese. That ounce is the avoirdupois ounce, which weighs 28.349523125 grams. The troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier.

The troy system takes its name from Troyes, a city in the Champagne region of France that hosted major medieval trade fairs. Merchants from across Europe converged on Troyes, and the local weight system became the standard for precious goods. By the 1400s, the troy ounce was the accepted measure for gold, silver, and gemstones across most of Europe.

The avoirdupois system (from the Anglo-Norman French "avoir de pois," meaning "goods of weight") developed separately for everyday trade goods: grain, wool, butter, iron. It became the standard system for general commerce in England and later in the United States.

Here is the part that catches people off guard. The troy ounce is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce, but the troy pound is lighter than the avoirdupois pound. A troy pound contains 12 troy ounces (12 x 31.103 = 373.24 grams). An avoirdupois pound contains 16 avoirdupois ounces (16 x 28.350 = 453.59 grams). So the troy pound is about 17.7% lighter than the everyday pound, even though the troy ounce is heavier than the everyday ounce.

This matters most in precious metals markets. Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium are all traded worldwide in troy ounces. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which sets the global benchmark gold price, specifies troy ounces. A standard gold bar (the "London Good Delivery" bar) weighs approximately 400 troy ounces, or about 12.44 kilograms. If you mistakenly calculate its value using avoirdupois ounces, you would be off by nearly 10%.

Fluid Ounce vs Ounce (Weight)

This is not a case of two units with slightly different values. A fluid ounce and a weight ounce measure fundamentally different physical quantities. A fluid ounce measures volume. A weight ounce (avoirdupois ounce) measures mass. They are as different as asking "how tall" versus "how heavy."

The US fluid ounce equals 29.5735295625 milliliters. The avoirdupois ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. The reason these numbers are so close is no coincidence. The fluid ounce was originally conceived as the volume of one ounce of water. But water's density varies with temperature, and the exact definitions drifted over time.

At room temperature (about 20 degrees Celsius), one US fluid ounce of water weighs approximately 1.043 avoirdupois ounces, or about 29.57 grams. Close to one ounce by weight, but not exact. For water, the difference is small enough to ignore in casual cooking. For other liquids, it is not. One fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 avoirdupois ounces because honey is denser than water. One fluid ounce of olive oil weighs about 0.95 avoirdupois ounces because oil is lighter.

To make things more confusing, the imperial fluid ounce is different from the US fluid ounce. The imperial fluid ounce equals 28.4130625 milliliters, about 4% smaller than the US fluid ounce. The imperial system defines its fluid ounce as 1/20 of an imperial pint, while the US system defines its fluid ounce as 1/16 of a US pint.

Recipes are the most common place this causes problems. An American recipe calling for "8 ounces of flour" almost certainly means 8 ounces by weight (about 227 grams). An American recipe calling for "8 ounces of milk" might mean 8 fluid ounces (about 237 milliliters), which would weigh about 245 grams. When a recipe just says "ounces" without specifying fluid or weight, context is the only clue. Liquids are usually measured by volume, dry ingredients by weight.

Short Ton vs Long Ton vs Metric Ton

Three units called "ton" with three different values. The short ton (used in the United States) equals 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kilograms. The long ton (used historically in Britain and the Commonwealth) equals 2,240 avoirdupois pounds, or 1,016.0469088 kilograms. The metric ton (also called the tonne, spelled with an "e" to distinguish it) equals exactly 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,204.62 pounds.

The long ton was the original British ton. The number 2,240 comes from the fact that a long ton contains 20 hundredweight, and a British hundredweight is 112 pounds (8 stone of 14 pounds each). When the United States adopted the ton, it simplified the hundredweight to 100 pounds, giving 20 hundredweight of 100 pounds each, or 2,000 pounds total. That is the short ton.

The metric tonne, at 1,000 kilograms, falls within 1.6% of the long ton (1,016 kg). This near-coincidence made the transition to metric tonnage relatively painless in industries that had been using long tons. A cargo ship rated for 50,000 long tons could carry about 50,800 metric tonnes, close enough that ballpark estimates still held.

In international shipping, "deadweight tonnage" (the total weight a vessel can carry including cargo, fuel, fresh water, and crew) is expressed in either long tons or metric tonnes depending on the era and jurisdiction. Modern shipping has largely standardized on metric tonnes. The confusion arises when reading older shipping records, insurance documents, or historical trade data that may use long tons without specifying.

The word "ton" without qualification means different things in different countries. In the US, "ton" means the short ton (2,000 pounds). In the UK, "ton" historically meant the long ton (2,240 pounds), though metric tonnes have largely replaced it. In international scientific and commercial contexts, "tonne" (or "metric ton") means 1,000 kilograms.

Nautical Mile vs Statute Mile

The statute mile, used on roads and in everyday conversation across the United States and United Kingdom, equals exactly 5,280 feet or 1,609.344 meters. The nautical mile equals exactly 1,852 meters. A nautical mile is about 15.08% longer than a statute mile.

The statute mile's length of 5,280 feet dates to 1593, when the English Parliament defined a mile as 8 furlongs of 660 feet each. The number comes from land surveying, where furlongs and chains divided neatly into acres.

The nautical mile has a completely different origin. It was designed to correspond to one minute of arc of latitude along any meridian. Since the Earth's circumference spans 360 degrees of latitude, and each degree contains 60 minutes, one minute of arc represents roughly 1/21,600 of the polar circumference. On a perfectly spherical Earth, that would give a consistent distance. But the Earth is an oblate spheroid, slightly wider at the equator and flatter at the poles. One minute of latitude varies from about 1,842.9 meters at the equator to about 1,861.7 meters at the poles.

In 1929, the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference in Monaco adopted 1,852 meters as the standard nautical mile, a practical integer compromise close to the mean value across all latitudes. That definition remains in force today and is used worldwide in maritime and aviation navigation.

The nautical mile's connection to latitude makes it uniquely useful for navigation. On a nautical chart, one minute of latitude on the chart's edge is one nautical mile. This direct relationship between the coordinate system and the distance unit simplifies course plotting. Speed at sea is measured in knots (one knot equals one nautical mile per hour), which preserves the same clean relationship in time-distance calculations.

Mixing up nautical and statute miles in navigation or aviation produces errors of about 15%. Over a 500-mile flight, that is a 75-mile discrepancy, enough to miss an airport or miscalculate fuel requirements.

The pattern across all these pairs is the same. Two systems evolved from the same roots, diverged at some historical turning point, and ended up with units that share a name but not a definition. When in doubt, specify which one you mean, or convert to SI units where the definitions are unambiguous.
